Norwegian Cuts Narrow-Body Trans-Atlantic Flights

Norwegian Air International (D8/IBK), one of the largest long-haul airlines of Europe, has announced that it will be cutting its long-haul narrow-body flights to the United States and Canada. The airline currently operates multiple flights between Ireland and North America, all of which will be cut. Norwegian currently operates trans-Atlantic flights from three Irish hubs, which are the country’s three largest airports. The routes that will be cut are as follows: Dublin to Hamilton, Newburgh and Providence Shannon to Newburgh and Providence Cork to Providence The six routes that the airline operated provided the only long-haul airline service into each of the North American airports, however, the airline has cut the routes while it tries to move into profitability from its growth stage. Each of the routes was either suspended or modified at the start of the global Boeing 737 MAX grounding. While the Shannon and Cork routes were suspended, the Dublin routes were operated with replacement aircraft, mainly the airline’s fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. Norwegian’s Senior Vice President of Long-Haul Commercial Operations stated regarding the route cuts: “As the airline moves from growth to profitability, we have conducted a comprehensive review of our transatlantic operations between Ireland and North America and considering the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, we have concluded that these routes are no longer commercially viable. We take a strict approach to route management and constantly evaluate route performance to ensure we meet customer demand. Compounded by the global grounding of the 737 MAX and the continued uncertainty of its return to service, this has led us to make the difficult decision to discontinue all six routes from Dublin, Cork and Shannon to the US and Canada from 15 September 2019.” Passengers booked on the flights after September 15 will either be re-booked onto another Norwegian flight or will receive a full refund.
