January 19, 2018

A Fastjet Embraer ERJ-190 plane struck a person on the runway while on the takeoff run.

According to AvHerald, The plane Registration 5H-FJI, flight #FN-148 from Mwanza to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania with 83 people on board, was accelerating for takeoff at about 21:05LT, the crew noticed a person in the middle of the active runway. The crew attempted some limited evasive maneouver and continued takeoff. The crew informed the Tower after climbing out of the Airport. After landing at Dar es Salaam the crew received a massage that the person had succumbed to the injuries.

The airline confirmed the accident and grounded the aircraft for investigation and released a condolence note “Fastjet would like to extend its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the dead.”

In response to such incidents, Acting Director General of the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA), Richard Mayongela said,”Although the plane hit the man whose name we do not know, the aircraft has to continue to the takeoff. It’s like the train, ” and added “It’s not known where that man came from. Security and security devices are located at the scene to investigate the event in detail and we will give full information when the investigation is complete”

“Perhaps the long-term lack of fence we face in construction and expansion of the aerodrome can be the reason for the person to cross the active runway” he said.
