Plane skids off the runway – Nepal’s international airport is shut down

April 20, 2018

Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu has been closed after a passenger plane of Malindo Air, a Malaysian airline, attempting to take off skidded off the runway last night. Malindo Air has regular flights linking Kuala Lumpur and Kathmandu.

The Boeing 737 operated by Malindo Air skidded on to the grass area at the end of runway. Attempts are being made to pull out the aircraft. All flights have been cancelled since the Thursday night accident. Airport authorities say that thousands of passengers have waited outside the terminal, but they are not in a position to say when flights would resume.

There were no casualties, according to the spokesperson. Last month, a Bangladeshi passenger plane crashed at this airport while attempting to land, killing 49 people out of 71 on board.
